so much to say so little time!!

egad!! life is way tooo busy. but i need to post! or i'll never keep up! sorta like exercising...you stop, hard to get started again! so to make all happy, i'll try to keep things sorta short (sorry, not short at all):

school:
insane last week. right after i got back from lovely vermont, i had to prepare for a journal club presentation (critique journal articles in front of class, like methods, statistical methods used, blah blah.)
- on wed, i had to give a pelvic exam to a "practice model"! yup...it was interesting. saw a cervix, estimated size of her uterus, and felt ovaries. don't think ob/gyn is for me, although one of the instructors had to embarass me by saying, "Wow, that was the best i've seen anyone reveal the hood of the clitoris! I wonder what speciality you may be going into!" i had no clue what i was doing--just happened to be going last and imitated the people who went before me.
- i also had a big Digestive Diseases exam on thurs, so lotsa cramming all week.
- oh, and also had to meet twice with MD preceptor for our "Clinical Practicum" course where we go to hospital several times a week now to see patients. My preceptor, Dr. Soong, is a cute, but married (aren't they all?). I had a nervous breakdown on Thursday. we went to see a this obese diabetic patient who had MI (heart attack) a week ago. He's 5'8, 360 lbs. Dr. Soong interviewed him, and my group (there is 4 of us) took turns doing a physical exam on him. I had to do the musculoskeletal/sensory/and nervous function tests. that went ok, but when we went back into the conference room to discuss our findings, everything went downhill. Dr kept prompting us with questions ("where do you think his edema/swelling is from?" "what could have caused his MI?" "why do you think he's on that drug?"), and i had NO CLUE as to ANY of the answers!! i felt soooo DUMB. my group, on the otherhand, were firing answers (or guesses) away no like other. i kept so quiet he finally called on me and said, "nancy, why don't you present the case to us orally." at least that was easy. my group came out saying that they feel so much more confident, that they now know more than they think, how great it was, etc etc. NOT ME. i kept quiet. i was very disappointed in myself, and knew i had lotsa catching up to do. =(
- so, in my disappointment and frustration, i immediately looked for more patients to interview on my own. we are required to do a complete medical history and physical exam on a patient at least every other week (takes about 2-4h depending per patient), so i had to get started. turns out, i couldn't even get ONE single patient!! Pt #1: was gonna take walk with daughter, will be back later. Pt #2: already got interviewed earlier, too tired. Pt #3: 83 yo lady who would not stop talking about how great the cafeteria liver tasted, and her million relatives. 20 min into the interview, all i got out of her is "i can't breath well, i think it's inherited." so i had to give that one up unless i wanted to stay there for 5h! Pt #4: this guy in wheelchair, said, "my kidney's dying, i'm on dialysis." I almost made a dumb mistake by asking, "which kidney?" when obviously both are prob dying if he's on dialysis! good thing no MD there. he seemed very secretive about something, would not give me much info, and finally made an excuse that he was tired. so i left, went to read his chart to see what was really going on, and he followed me out and said, "oh no, you don't want to read that chart! you'll find things!" and proceeded to stare at me continuously while i glanced over his records. so he was a IVD (iv drug user) and other stuff, but whatever. weird patient. Tried 2 more times on different floors to get patients, no avail--they had all been taken by my 30 other classmates. Great--1.5h in hospital, got nothing. felt even more disappointed.

So i went to badm after that same Thursday (loooong day), and played like crap. Radu was there. he looked mad or something. bad night at badminton.

Fri - after class and dinner, i made a second attempt to find a patient. i finally got one that was coherent and cooperative, only 53yo and a phd so very helpful towards students. instead of 5'8 and 360, this guy was 5'8 and 110!! well, now he's 140. but he claims to be 110 his entire adult life til last year! WOW! finished the entire interview and PE in less than 3h. came home, typed up his report til 4am (started at 1am). turns out, the teacher wants the report HANDWRITTEN so i had to recopy it all by hand (4 single-spaced typed pages) into 10 pages--gave me hand cramp. what a waste of time.

so that's it in a nutshell, and that's just school. this week i have my endocrinology exam, which includes diabetes, hyper/hypothyroidism, etc. big test again. it was supposed to happen AFTER spring break, but my classmates voted to have it before so as to truly relax during break. and now i'm procrastinating! =P

Badminton:
decided to play singles for Boston Open coming up 3/25-27, so starting to train up again. went to play badm both Sat and Sun at Yale--pretty rusty, but i'll try to practice more when i get home to SJ. no radu at either--he's in maryland with andy on a coaching program.

Personal:
this you will have to wait to hear =P

sorry so long, i've wasted 25 min of study time, oh well!
